Forgotten Valley Community & Youth Development Project

the Community & Youth program based at Wisemans Ferry has two components:-

  • Community Capacity building projects aim to build stronger communities by developing stronger links between community members and assisting members of disadvantaged communities to participate in community life and activities.
  • The  Community Hub aims to work with individuals, service providers and community groups to provide a locally based, single poing of access to service and information that is accessible to all members of the community.  The Community Hub provides resources that connect people to information and services that promote community capacity building, increased resilience and improved safety in the community

All activities are advertised in the local Community newsletter "Forgotten Valley Views"

Community Consultation

Community consultation is essential to planning and developing effective programs for a community.  it is about information sharing, listening to community members, respecting and understanding how programs will impact on the community, to maximise outcomes for the community.

The Boat License Course is an example of a program which was developed following community consultation.  (in partnership with Marine Rescue NSW)

 Wisemans Waves Support Group

Following a successful education seminar presented by the Blackdog Institute on mood disorders at the Wisemans Ferry community Centre in february 2010, Peppercorn Services Inc and the local community were keen to develop a support group for people who experience mood disorders.

Whilst the group is not a "therapeutic group" it aims to provide individuals with an arena to discuss their own story, whilst gaining support and information from other local community members who share similar experiences.

"One of the best ways to deal with a tough time is to draw on the support of other people who can listed and validate our feelings.  Tackline problems with others is a resourceful way to lessen our load.  Ofter it takes several friends who can provide different kinds of support to support us bounce back" (NSW Mental Health Week 2010 theme)".

The support group hopes to promote positive thinking and an optimistic outlook through appreciation of the little things in life.  Focusing on the positives and dwelling less on the negatives is one way we can build our emotional resilience, reduce stress and enhance mental wellbeing.
